Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival - Region IV
Welcome to the new web home of KCACTF REGION IV!

Design Chair Letter Archive

The time is drawing near! It is not too early to register for the design activities and competitions for the Region IV festival in Americus, Georgia. The deadline for all design entrants is January 22, 2007.  This is especially important this year as space is limited.  Once the exhibit spaces are designed, it will be virtually impossible to add late entries.  Please note that pre-registration for Design Storm 2007 and the 12/10 Sketches are also on the registration form.

Awards are not only for the students, but faculty as well. Each year the regional selection committee receives nominations recognizing outstanding faculty who have demonstrated dedication to KCACTF and its mission by nurturing student participation.  The faculty selected from our region will compete for nationally sponsored master class "intensives" in his or her area of design or technology.  If you know of a faculty designer who deserves such recognition please send their name and information to dmeester@bama.ua.edu as soon as possible.  Any interested faculty is welcome to submit their own name for nomination.

In keeping with previous years' guidelines, we are still planning on 4'x 8' display panels for the following competitions of realized productions: Barbizon (set, costume and lighting designs) and Alcone Makeup; Sound Designers will have half of a 6' table and some hanging space.  The Barbizon, Alcone Makeup and Sound Design winners will be eligible to participate at the National KCACTF in Washington D.C. in April.

The David Weiss exhibits (paper projects or realized productions that were not participating or associate entries) will also receive 4' x 8' panels. Note there can be no photos of realized productions in the David Weiss Competition. This is an award unique to Region IV, therefore there will be no national recognition.  However, the winners in each category (set, costume and lighting) will receive certificates and cash awards.

The Technical Design and Crafts Awards is an exhibition that is open to all students of theatre design and technology who receive endorsement from their faculty supervisors.  Projects exhibited may include any formal presentation of problem solving which moves the design from the sketch to the stage including properties, costume crafts, carpentry, technical engineering, drafting, and production management. Winners will receive certificates and cash awards.  For faculty who may not be able to attend the summer intensive, faculty and staff scenic, costume, and lighting designers and technologists from across the region are invited (and encouraged) to show their work in the Faculty and Staff Design and Technologies Showcase.  Certificates will be presented to all participants.

If space becomes too limited, adjustments may need to be made.  You will be notified soon after January 22 if this is the case.  As always, if it is not possible for you to travel with your exhibit, it is possible to send your design directly to Americus.  The address to mail your work to is on the registration form.  Please do not confuse the shipping address with the address to send your registration form to!

The address to send exhibits to (NOT registration) is:
Ray Mannila
Dramatic Arts, GSW
800 Georgia Southwestern State University Drive
Americus, Georgia  31709

Note that Stage Management is no longer "housed" under Design and Technologies. It can now be found here.

Finally, you may notice two more smiling faces by my side in Americus.  I would like to introduce two very important people who make this team complete.  Ron Keller (Virginia Commonwealth University) and Cliff Simon (University of Alabama at Birmingham) are the Design and Technologies Co-Vice Chairs.  The area of Design and Technologies has grown so much in recent years that it now takes three people to organize and manage!  If you have questions please feel free to contact me at dmeester@bama.ua.edu or by phone at (205) 348-9032.

Thank you,
Donna Meester, Region IV Design Chair
