KENNEDY CENTER FACULTY SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS IN
COSTUME, SCENERY & LIGHTING
The annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Summer Intensives program is an exceptional professional development opportunity for both faculty and students to work side-by-side with distinguished theatre artists in design for two intensives weeks in residence at the Kennedy Center. Involved faculty who encourage student participation in KCACTF design events and competitions are considered for these fellowships.
The national design fellowship honorees (one nationally in each of these three design areas: costumes, scenery, and lighting) will receive a grant for travel and lodging, as well as per diem, to attend the KCACTF Summer Design Intensives, presented by the Kennedy Center with Ming Cho Lee, Constance Hoffman and Beverly Emmons as master teachers.
Each of the eight KCACTF regions will name one of their faculty members in each of the three design areas as the outstanding teaching artist in their area of specialty. The Regional Design Chair, Design Vice-Chair, along with the Professional Development Coordinator will review the application material from those candidates who have self-nominated as well as review the recommendations from respondents. After the selected faculty members have agreed to the nomination, application materials will be forwarded to Ming Cho Lee, Beverly Emmons and Constance Hoffman who will make the final decisions.
Nomination/Selection Process
- Any regional faculty or staff member can be nominated by their peers (please verify the nominees interest and availability for the project) or be self-nominated. Simply send a letter of nomination to the Regional Design & Technology Chair listing the nominees’ qualifications, KCACTF involvement and contact information.
2. The Regional Design & Technology Chair will then contact the nominee and request a letter of intent and give them the list of support material needed and the deadline for submission.
3. All nominees who desire to compete for a fellowship will send a letter of intent, two letters of recommendation, and their limited portfolio to the Regional Design & Technology Chair.
4. The Regional Design & Technology Chair will forward all entries to the Regional Executive Committee.
5. The Regional Executive Committee will nominate faculty members from the region to compete for the National KCACTF Summer Intensives program (master class fellowships) in their area of design.
6. Display space will be given to each Regional Design Fellowship Nominee to showcase his or her work at the Regional Festival. The Regional Fellowship Nominees will also be announced at the regional festival awards ceremony.
7. The Regional Design & Technology Chair will then forward all Regional Design Fellowship Nominees’ materials to the National Chair of Design & Technology. Selection of the National Design Fellowships Nominees will be done at the annual USITT Conference by a Fellowship Committee consisting of qualified persons other than Regional Design & Technology Chairs. The National Design & Technologies Chair and/or the National Design & Technology Vice Chair will serve on the committee to insure that the best interests of KCACTF are carried out.
8. A minimum of two nominees in each design area will be forwarded to the distinguished theatre artists leading the intensives who will choose the Fellowship participants.
